What you need to know

This course is intended for students age 10-14, but we welcome students as young as 8, ideally showing greater maturity for their age.

The course focuses on the following:

  • Am I ready to stay home alone?
  • Top 10 Safety Rules
  • Stranger Safety
  • Phone Safety
  • Kitchen Safety
  • Computer/Internet Safety
  • Choking
  • Burns
  • Fire Safety

The course helps students develop skills for self-safety and critical thinking, and builds confidence and independence when at home alone

*PLEASE NOTE: This course DOES NOT “certify” that your child is able to stay home alone or when he/she may begin staying at home alone. This is a discussion and decision made as a family. Every child is different. Every situation is also different. Each should be assessed individually.

The Home Alone Program gives children the knowledge and tools to call upon to be safe when they and you are ready for this big step. After completing the course, your child will have many ideas to discuss with you on how they can be more safe. We also provide resources at the back of their student manual for parents.

Please feel free to review a great resource put together by the Durham Children’s Aid Society on Guidelines for the Supervision of Children
